National Adoption Week: Why It Matters and How We Can Help

24/10/2025

National Adoption Week shines a light on the incredible families formed through adoption and the children whose futures depend on it. Beyond celebration, it’s also a time to raise awareness of the legal and emotional complexities involved in the process, and to encourage those considering adoption to seek early advice and support.

Understanding the Adoption Process in the UK

Adoption is a beautiful way to start or build a family. However, it is a legal process and sometimes can be quite complicated. Our Family Law Team is well equipped to advise and assist people with adoption and early legal advice can be beneficial.

How to Begin the Adoption Journey

There is a clear but complicated structure in place for how to apply for adoption. The starting point is to apply with your local adoption agency which is usually linked to the local authority where adoptive families reside.

The Role of Local Authorities and Courts

The local authority prepares a detailed report about eligibility for adoption and then works to match adoptive children with the right family.  There is then a Court process where adoptive families apply to adopt the child or children. While this often goes smoothly, there can be occasions where it is a little more difficult.

Parental Consent and Notification in Adoption Cases

When adopting a child, it is important for anyone who previously held parental responsibility for that child to be notified. They have the opportunity to either agree or object with the adoption process.

Who Can Adopt? Types of Adoptive Families

There are also many types of families who adopt children. These include other relatives of the child or individuals with no prior relationship.  Regardless of background, adoption is a beautiful and wonderful way to create families.

Recent Decline in Adoption Rates

The BBC recently posted an article confirming that there has been a decline in adoption which is linked to the cost of living concerns.  According to the latest figures there has been a 12% drop in adoption registrations compared to last year across England.

Regional Adoption Statistics: Supply vs Demand

In the Southeast, more children are waiting to be adopted than there are approved adopters, with 300 children awaiting families and only 250 registered adopters..

Challenges in the Adoption Process

Part of the decline can also be due to the lengthy and often intrusive assessment phase. Adoption agencies work hard to ensure that children are placed with the right families.
