What is Mediation

Although Mediation has been what is commonly known as an "Alternative Form of Dispute Resolution" for years, it became a corner stone of the family legal system on 1st April 2011.

From that date, save for in a limited number of exceptional circumstances, proceedings cannot be issued in relation to children or financial provision without the person who wishes to issue the proceeding first having attended a "MIAMS" appointment. A MIAMS appointment is where a party meets with an independent trained mediator who provides information on the mediation process and assess whether the case is suitable.

At Pinney Talfourd we believe that for very many clients mediation is the best way forward. It provides a safe, calm environment in which to discuss a host of issues from children related matters to divorce proceedings to financial issues whilst also being a cost effective means of resolving matters.

We try to work in conjunction with our local mediators so whilst attending mediation our clients can also obtain advice from us to ensure they feel supported and that the right agreement is reached.

Clients don't need to instruct us in relation to all matters but we do want to support clients through the process. We are happy to see clients for one off appointments whilst they proceed through the mediation process if they would prefer.

We have a great deal of experience in working with a number of mediators locally and nationally and can advise our clients not only what to expect but whom they should use and why.
